Description of Furazolidone Nitrofurantoin 99.25% 1000 g:

Nitrofuran antimicrobial agent for the treatment of animals and humans. Physical and chemical properties – synthetic nitrofuran antibacterial drug; lemon-yellow crystalline powder with a bitter taste, pKa is 7.2. Very slightly soluble in water and alcohol.

The drug has a strong antimicrobial effect against gram-positive and gram-negative microorganisms; has a detrimental effect on Trichomonas. Microbes that are sensitive to furazolidone slowly become resistant.

Ingredients:

Nitrofurantoin 99.25%

Pharmacological Properties of Furazolidone Nitrofurantoin 99,25% 1000 g:

Bacteriostatic antibacterial action, but it can also have a bactericidal effect, which depends on its concentration and sensitivity of bacteria. The exact mechanism of action of nitrofurantoin continues to be clarified, but it is believed that the drug inhibits various enzyme systems in bacteria, including acetyl coenzyme A. In an acidic environment, the antibacterial activity of nitrofurantoin increases.

The drug is rapidly absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract, the presence of food enhances the absorption of the drug. The macrocrystalline form of the drug is absorbed more slowly with less gastrointestinal upset. Due to the slow absorption of nitrofurantoin, its level in the urine can be maintained for a long time.

Furazolidone does not reach therapeutic levels in the systemic circulation in cats and dogs, since after absorption, its rapid elimination is noted. With serum proteins, nitrofurantoin binds approximately 20-60%. The maximum concentration is observed 30 minutes after administration. The drug crosses the placenta, only a minimal amount of furadonin is found in the milk of animals.

About 40-50% of the drug is eliminated in animals in the urine unchanged by glomerular filtration and tubular secretion. Part of nitrofurantoin is metabolized mainly in the liver. The elimination half-life in a person with normal renal function averages 20 minutes.

Indications for use Furazolidone Nitrofurantoin 99,25% 1000 g:

Indications for nitrofurantoin in veterinary medicine are quite wide. It is considered an antiseptic in the treatment of urinary tract diseases in animals and is prescribed mainly to dogs and cats, but also to horses for the treatment of lower urinary tract infections caused by sensitive bacteria. The drug is ineffective for the treatment of abscesses of the cortical layer of the kidney, peripheral abscesses or other systemic infections in animals.

Treatment and prevention of colibacillosis, salmonellosis, coccidiosis, dyspepsia and other bacterial infections in animals and poultry caused by microorganisms sensitive to the drug, as well as balantidiasis of pigs and carp rubella.

Contraindications for use Furazolidone Nitrofurantoin 99,25% 1000 g:

Nitrofurantoin is contraindicated in animals with kidney damage, since in this case the effectiveness of the drug is sharply reduced, and the likelihood of developing a toxic effect increases. Furazolidone is also contraindicated in animals that are hypersensitive to it.

In human medicine, nitrofurantoin is contraindicated in the approach of childbirth and newborns, because due to the underdevelopment of the enzyme system, hemolytic anemia may develop. The safety of furadonin in early pregnancy in animals has not been established. It is assumed that nitrofurantoin can cause infertility in male dogs, so in these cases, the success of treatment with the drug should be carefully correlated with possible side effects.

Interactions:

Uricosuric drugs such as sulfinpyrazone or probenecid may inhibit the excretion of nitrofurantoin through the kidneys and increase its toxicity in dogs, cats and other animal species, as well as reduce its effectiveness in the treatment of urinary tract infections.

Nitrofurantoin may interfere with the antimicrobial activity of fluoroquinolones (eg, enrofloxacin, ciprofloxacin), so their combined use in veterinary medicine is not recommended.

Antacids containing magnesium trisilicate can inhibit the absorption of Furazolidone when administered orally. Diet and anticholinergics may increase the bioavailability of nitrofurantoin when administered orally. Influence on laboratory parameters of furadonin can lead to false positive results when determining glucose in the urine when using a test with solutions of copper sulfate (Benedict’s reagent, Clinitest®). Nitrofurantoin has no effect on the determination of urine glucose using the glucose oxidase method.

Nitrofurantoin can cause a decrease in blood glucose levels and an increase in creatinine, bilirubin and serum alkaline phosphatase levels in animals of all species.

Side  Effects:

Dogs and cats may develop gastrointestinal disturbances and hepatopathy. Cases of neuropathy, chronic ACTIVE hepatitis, hemolytic anemia and pneumonitis have been reported, but these disorders are very rare in veterinary medicine.

Overdose:

Acute toxicity, no specific information has been established. Since furadonin is rapidly absorbed and excreted, animals with normal renal function and moderate overdoses require minimal therapy. Excessive overdosing in animals should be corrected with bowel cleansing if the intake is recent, after which the animal should be closely monitored.

Storage:

A dry, dark, inaccessible place for children at a temperature of +5°C to +25°C.

Shelf life:

3 years.

Doses of Furazolidone

Orally mixed with food or individually at the following doses:

  • calves and piglets 3-5 mg/kg live weight for 3-7 days;
  • poultry 2-3 g per 1000 heads twice a day for 5-8 days;
  • carp: 1-2 g / 10 kg of feed for 5-7 days.

Nitrofurantoin is widely used in dogs:
For drug-sensitive bacterial infections of the urinary tract:

  • dog dose 4 mg/kg orally every 6 hours (Osborne and Lulich 1987);
  • Furazolidone is dosed to dogs for recurrent infectious diseases of the urinary tract: the standard dose is 4 mg / kg per os every 8 hours; a prophylactic dose of 3-4 mg/kg orally every 24 hours (should be given in the evening immediately after urination and just before bedtime) (Polzin and Osborne 1985);
  • in dogs, nitrofurantoin is administered in a dosing regimen of 4 mg/kg orally 3 times daily (Morgan 1988).

The use of furadonin in cats:
For drug-sensitive bacterial infections of the urinary tract:

  • furadonin is administered to cats at a dose of 4 mg/kg orally every 6 hours (Osborne and Lulich 1987);
  • for recurrent infectious diseases of the urinary tract in cats: the standard dose of nitrofurantoin is 4 mg/kg orally every 8 hours. Prophylactic dose in cats is 3–4 mg/kg po q 24 h (should be given in the evening immediately after urination and just before bedtime) (Polzin and Osborne 1985).

Instructions for the use of furadonin for horses
For bacterial infections of the urinary tract that are sensitive to the drug:

  • furadonin is dosed to horses at the rate of 2.5-4.5 mg/kg per os 3 times a day (Robinson 1987);
  • the horse dose is 10 mg/kg orally daily (Huber 1988a).

Parameters for monitoring the effectiveness of animal therapy with nitrofurantoin:

  • clinical efficacy;
  • side effects;
  • tests that determine the functional state of the liver should be carried out periodically with long-term treatment.
