It is one of two tablet drugs currently recommended by WHO, available without a prescription in most countries, and is a synthetic gestagen, pharmacologically twice as active isomer of norgestrel.
Norgestrel is one of the gestagens (progestogens), natural female sex hormones. The greatest quantities of gestagens are produced in the ovaries in the 2nd phase of the menstrual cycle (luteal phase). They are responsible for preparing the reproductive tract for the implantation of a fertilized egg. Normally, after ovulation, gestagens produced by the corpus luteum (corpus luteum) block the pituitary hormones FSH and, to a lesser extent, LH, thus delaying the onset of a new cycle of egg maturation. The ability of gestagens to influence the release of FSH and LH is an important mechanism of the contraceptive action of their synthetic analogues>
